IT 3100: Systems Design and Administration I

Review 2

Due according to the class schedule.

Assignment

In this assignment, you will review work from the DNS assignments.

Throughout the semester this application must be functioning correctly.

Another Domain

Arrange with another classmate to obtain a sub domain. This must be with a person you haven’t worked with on previous DNS assignments.

Authoritative Master

Configure your authoritative master to be authoritative for this new sub domain.

Authoritative Slave

Configure your authoritative slave to be authoritative for this new sub domain.

Zone File

Create a zone file for the new domain. This zone file must have the following translations:

Caching Lookup Server

Configure your two DNS servers to also be caching lookup servers for 144.38.197.10, in addition to the IPs they already provide this service for.

Caching Lookup Client

Know how to change the name of a machine. (Editing of files in /etc so the system knows its own name.

Know how to configure a client to use caching lookup servers you assign.

Delegate Authority

Delegate authority for theforce.yourdomain to 144.38.199.50 and 144.38.199.51. Give them names master.theforce.yourdomain and apprentice.theforce.yourdomain.

Errors

If you see errors that don’t have to do with your IP address, you can safely ignore them.

Submission File Format

The submission file is a UNIX text file, and must have this format, exactly!

The file must be named review_info.txt.

newdomain: subdomain.from.classmate
master: ip.of.your.authoritative.master
slave: ip.of.your.authoritative.slave
domain1: domain.you.delegated.from

Make sure you are putting the IP’s of YOUR master/slave… not your partners.

For example, my file may look like this:

newdomain: games.horgoth.com
master: 144.38.214.2
slave: 144.38.214.3
domain1: dsutux.us
