These instructions pertain to how to correctly configure a network interface on Xenial version of ubuntu. No longer can you use eth0 or eth1 for your network interface references (at least not without additional configuration). To find out the name for your nic, issue the following command:

You should see something like:

    [    1.739137] 8139cp 0000:00:03.0 ens3: renamed from eth0

So, eth0 has been renamed. Use ens3 as the interface name. You can configure /etc/network/interfaces as normal or create a configuration file and place it in the subdirectory that the interfaces file is including.
