Associate of Applied Science | Associate of Science

An Associate of Science Degree may be earned by completing those classes required for drafting plus the college general education requirements for an Associate of Science Degree. This degree is transfer oriented and prepares the student with necessary job skills.

ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Dixie College's general education requirements are of two types: skill courses and content courses. You must complete 14 credits of skill courses, and 24 credits of content courses, for a total of at least 38 general education credits, leaving up to 25 elective credits.

PLACEMENT IN BASIC SKILLS COURSES:

Communication Skills Placement. If your placement score is:

  • 40 or lower, complete ENGL 0750 or challenge test this competency level before taking ENGL 1010.
  • 41-49, complete ENGL 0920 or challenge test this competency level before taking ENGL 1010.
  • 50 or higher, sign up for ENGL 1010.
Reading Skills Placement. If your placement score is:
  • 40 or lower, either complete ENGL 0470 or challenge test this competency level before taking ENGL 1010, HIST 1700, or POLS 1100.
  • 41-49, you are strongly encouraged to complete ENGL 1470 within your first 24 credits at Dixie.
Math Skills Placement. If your ACT Math score is:
  • 12 or lower, take MATH 0900
  • 13 to 16, take MATH 0930
  • 17 to 22, take MATH 1010
  • 23 or higher, take MATH 1030, 1050, or 1090

SKILLS COURSES: 14 CREDITS

Communications Skills (CS),
2 courses/6 credits

Take ENGL 1010 and ENGL 2010 or, if you will major in business, 2011 (Note: You must pass ENGL 1010 with a C- or better before entering ENGL 2010 or 2011).

Oral Communications Skills (OC),
1 course/3 credits

Take COMM 1010, 1020 or 1100

Computer Skills (CP),
1 course/2 credits

Take or test out of CIS 1200

Math skills (MA),
1 course/3 credits

Take one of the following courses:
MATH 1030, 1050, 1060, 1090, 1100, 1210, 1220, 2210, or 2250

CONTENT COURSES: 24 CREDITS

These courses are from six groups: American Institutions, Life Science, Physical Science, Social Science, Fine Arts, and Humanities.

American Institutions (AI),
1 course/3 credits

Americans Institutions groups: Take HIST 1700 or POLS 1100

Sciences (LS & PS),
3 courses/9 credits

Take three courses, one of which must be a laboratory(lab) course. If you take two courses in the physical science group, those courses must be from two different programs, with the exceptions that PHSX 1020 or 1030 may be taken with another PHSX course and count as two programs, but GEOG and GEOL count as the same program.

Life Science group. Take one or two of the following:
First course from BIOL 1010(lab), 1030(lab), or 1100(lab).

Second Course from BIOL 1050 (lab), 1120(lab), 1200, 1300, 2010(lab), 2040(lab), 2110(lab), 2300(lab), 2400, 2440(lab), or NFW 1020.

Physical Science group. Take one or two of the following:

    CHEM 1010(lab), 1110(lab), 1210(lab);
    GEOG 1200
    GEOL 1010(lab), 1020, 2310(lab)
    PHSX 1010, 1020, 1030(lab), 2010(lab), 2100(lab), or 2210(lab).
Social Sciences (SS), Fine Arts (FA), Humanities (HU)
4 courses/12 credits

Take one of these courses:
Social Science Group:
    ECON 2010, 2020
    HIST 1010, 1020
    SOC 1010, 1020
    GEOG 1400
    PSYC 1010, 2100
    FCS 1500
Take three of the following courses. At least one course must be from the Fine Arts group, and at least one course must be a literature (lit) course. If you take two courses from the Fine Arts group, those courses must be from two different programs.
