The Computer Information Systems and Computer Skills courses at Dixie State College are all self-paced. Students meet at the beginning of the semester in an Orientation Session where an instructor gives an overview of the specific course work.
Orientation schedules are available by clicking on the Schedules link and are published in the Dixie State College class schedule. Attendance at Orientation is mandatory. This is where the students learn what is required to complete the course satisfactorily.
There are several advantages in a self-paced course. Students work “on their own” setting their own schedule for “class work.” Students are able to set their own study and class time and most importantly, they have access to faculty for one-on-one instruction in the Smith Computer Center.
The student will develop lifetime skills in personal time management and the ability to interpret and transform written instructions into course achievement objectives. These lifetime skills are mastered in addition to the various subject materials for each course.
There are two on-line systems, WebCT Vista and SAM that the students use to further assist their learning experience. WebCT Vista contains course information including syllabus, section outlines, deadline dates, and bulletin board information. In addition, other materials are provided in WebCT Vista as the course might require. SAM is an interactive tutorial and testing system that provides immediate feedback of a student’s progress. SAM also facilitates the testing and grading process for faculty.
